AI Policy

The Conversation is a unique collaboration between human experts and journalists to publish information and analysis you can trust. That’s why we don’t use AI in our editorial work.

Authors who use search engines that are powered by AI should only draw on primary sources (such as journal articles or government reports) they have read and checked. Editors ensure accuracy by double-checking facts from primary sources.

Prospective authors who submit articles to The Conversation do not need to use generative AI for editing; instead they are asked to leave editing to The Conversation’s editors. Articles that have used generative AI for fact-finding, summarising, idea generation or writing will generally not be accepted for publication, as large language models can introduce errors.

In exceptional circumstances this policy may be adjusted to accommodate accessibility needs.
