The Conversation U.S. is an independent, nonprofit media organization that publishes daily news analysis and explanatory journalism written by academics and edited by journalists for the general public. We will consider candidates working remotely in locations across the U.S. We currently have offices in Boston and New York and can offer a hybrid of in-person and work-from-home for candidates in those cities.

About the Accountability Editor role
This is a new position at The Conversation, and we are looking for someone who thrives in a startup environment and is eager not only to lead but to help create and iterate a new path for academics to be watchdogs of public dollars and private companies and to shine a light on wrongdoing. Our goal is to equip policymakers and individuals to make the best decisions they can. The ideal candidate will have a track record of creating impactful accountability journalism, including stellar research, reporting, writing and editing skills and experience working with a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify watchdog research that academics are conducting that is important for the public to know about.
- Help them write stories that are accessible in language, impact and word length.
- Work with other editors to research chosen ideas to find areas where people have been harmed or are at risk.
- Work with video and social teams to get stories out in different formats to reach audiences where they are.
- Manage short- and longer-term watchdog and accountability projects.
- Become a thought leader by attending conferences.
- Manage a data editor and freelancer.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated excellence as an accountability or investigative reporter or editor with a record of delivering exclusive and distinctive projects. The ability to edit complex stories in clear and compelling ways and juggle multiple projects.
- Experience working with academics/understanding the academic world.
- Experience managing partnerships. Working with complex datasets is a plus.
- Experience working with data tools.
Skills/Knowledge
- Reporting skills and news judgment to generate ideas for stories and seek out meaningful or undiscovered new research.
- Ability to work with scholar-authors to structure stories, simplify research without losing nuance, line edit copy into plain English and fact-check.
- Ability to understand and avoid conflicts of interest.
- Good grammar and story structure skills.
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to purposefully collaborate and be part of a dynamic team.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Willingness to ask for help when needed.
Every TC editorial team member is expected to:
- Understand and embrace our mission of democratizing scholarly knowledge for the public good.
- Attend daily news meetings and other staff meetings as required.
- Be productive remotely, take direction and work productively with a variety of people.

About this position
The Sponsorships & Underwriting Officer will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive revenue strategy, generating new sponsorship and partnership revenue across events, newsletters, digital platforms and mission-aligned initiatives.
This is a revenue-generating role responsible for building a sponsorship function from the ground up. The position will identify, structure and close new partnerships that align with the organization’s mission and audience, while maintaining strict editorial independence and adhering to nonprofit media standards.
The ideal candidate is both strategic and execution-oriented, capable of building a pipeline from zero, creating compelling sponsorship opportunities and closing revenue-generating underwriting partnerships that deliver long-term value.
Key responsibilities
Revenue Generation & Pipeline Development
- Build and manage a sponsorship pipeline from inception, including prospect identification, outreach and deal execution.
- Secure new sponsorship revenue across events, newsletters, digital platforms and partnerships.
- Develop and meet revenue goals with a focus on achieving full cost recovery within 18 months.
Partnership Strategy & Execution
- Structure customized sponsorship agreements aligned with mission and values.
- Lead negotiations and close agreements with partners.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit media standards and editorial. independence.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with editorial, development and audience teams to ensure alignment.
- Coordinate internally to deliver high-quality partner experiences.
Stewardship & Renewal
- Maintain relationships with partners to support renewals.
- Track and report on partnership performance.
Skills/Knowledge
- Strong negotiation and relationship management skills.
- Proven ability to generate and close new business.
- Strategic and execution-oriented mindset.
- Experience developing integrated sponsorship packages.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and cross-functionally.
Qualifications
- 7–10 years of experience in nonprofit media, corporate sponsorships or partnerships, demonstrated ability to build and close new business.
- Experience developing integrated sponsorship packages.
- Strong negotiation and relationship management skills.
- Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations preferred.
- Five years of journalism experience, including at least three years or more editing experience, preferably in a daily news environment. Wire experience is a plus.
