Republishing guidelines
We publish under a Creative Commons — Attribution/No derivatives licence. This means you can republish our articles for free, provided you follow these guidelines.
Note that images, charts and graphics are NOT covered under our Creative Commons licence. You must follow the copyright terms in the caption or seek permission from the rights holder.
Online
Edits: You may only edit to provide accurate references to time and place, or to comply with an editorial style. Any other edits need the author's approval (contact them via the blue contact button on their profile).
Attribution:
- Credit the author(s) and their institution(s), ideally in the byline
- Credit The Conversation with a link to our homepage or the original article (preferably at the top of the article)
- Include our logo where possible (see below).
Page counter: You must use our page view counter (an invisible 1x1 pixel). It's automatically included when you use the Republish button. See Page counter troubleshooting for details.
Restrictions:
- You must not sell our articles separately
- You must not systematically republish all our articles or frame our site
- Republishing with ads is fine, as long as the ads are not presented as part of the article.
Our Creative Commons licence does not cover images, charts, and interactive graphics, and you are responsible for securing permission if you wish to republish them. Some images cannot be reused without payment. When you click the republish button, any image not licensed for reuse will automatically be removed from the code. You can omit our images, use your own, or seek permission directly from the credited agency.
The same rules apply as online, except you don't need to include links or the page counter.
Please send a photo or PDF of the republished article to republish@theconversation.edu.au so we can share it with the author.
Special cases
Extracts: You can publish the first few lines/paragraphs, followed by: "Read the full article on The Conversation" (with a link). Otherwise, author consent is required.
Quotes: You can quote authors as long as you link back to the article.
Translations: These require author approval, as they are considered derivatives.
Podcasts and video: Covered under the same Creative Commons license, with the same attribution rules.
Consent forms: If you follow these guidelines, you don't need signed consent or copyright release forms.
Page counter troubleshooting
The page counter is an invisible 1x1 pixel image that lets us (and our authors) see when and where articles are republished.
Automatic capture: If you use the Republish button, the counter is included automatically.
Accessing it directly: Open Republish → Advanced if you need the counter on its own. This can help if:
- The code was deleted
- You translated the article
- You copied/pasted text instead of using the HTML
- You need to embed the counter as a widget in your CMS
- Your CMS caches pixels and needs the script form.
You can use the image, script, or iframe version of the counter.
Fixing spacing issues: If the counter creates white space, add this to the tag: style="border:0; height:1px !important; width:1px !important;"
Unique code: Each article has its own counter with a unique ID. If you copy code from another article or template, update the ID number.
Privacy: The counter doesn't collect personal data. We only record:
- The referring URL (site that republished)
- Browser user-agent (to exclude bots)
- IP address (used briefly for city-level location, then discarded).
